A spirituality of the earth
This is not a cloud (Ceci n'est pas un nuage) is a sculptural table, made of white, gray or black epoxy steel or in
mirror steel. The cloud-shaped top is placed on 5 legs. The work is variable in size and height. It can be installed
alone or in groups, as an ornamental and/or functional piece, indoors or outdoors.
Maud Louvrier Clerc was inspired by "The Treachery of Images", a painting by René Magritte better known by the
title of its label "This is Not a Pipe" and by 'The Tapestry of the Apocalypse' by Jean de Bruges in which the cloud
embodies the celestial kingdom characteristic of medieval iconography. The cloud, which is not a cloud, is created
by four interlocking carronds. A carrond is a fusion of a square and a round. They evoke the 4 pillars of sustainable
development: social, economic, environmental and cultural. The 5 legs of the work represent the 5 continents.
Together they support the cloud-shaped table-top, like an allegory of the global climate.
With this work, the artist defines sustainable development as a revelation of our interdependence with the Earth.
Through the poetics of a cloud on the ground, she summons a spirituality that is no longer looking upwards but
down here.
